Product Description

Scientific Name:  Curcuma longa.   Common name:  Turmeric, Yellow Jamaican Ginger.   This is a tropical herbaceous perennial plant with underground rhizomes,  which is  the source of yellow ginger root or Tumeric that is so popular in commerce today.   Tumeric is the ingredient that gives curry its yellowish orange color.  In traditional medicine it reportedly is  anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, thins the blood, lowers cholesterol and thus eases arthritis pain.  Some say it even helps men with ED.   Native to India but cultivated all over the world.

The plant has slender reed-like stems with dark glossy green leaves arising from tuberous rhizomes. Plants will reach about 20 inches (45 cm) tall and the lanceolate leaves reach 7 inches (17.5 cm) long.

Turmeric has been used for centuries as flavoring and as a treatment for all sorts of ailments, it can also been used as a clothing dye and as a cosmetic.  The  plant is easy to cultivate from rhizomes,   an easy plant to grow  and makes an excellent container plant.  Hardy from USDA zones 8-12. Tropical but can be wintered indoors in colder regions. Great for mass plantings and border areas.  If you are growing your turmeric in a container, water only when you feel the soil slightly dry to the touch. This will prevent leaching out of nutrients due to over watering.

The plant does not produce seeds; turmeric is grown from rhizomes (root cuttings) similar to ginger. Thus this offering.  Sound like a superplant?  You owe it to yourself to investigate more into why turmeric is so beneficial?
